Our Environmental Credentials

We are all increasingly aware of the fragility of the natural world - concerning the diminishing ozone layer, reduction of landfill sites and energy consumption.

As a paper warehousing and distribution company it was apparent that we could be creating issues that had a negative impact on the world in which we live.

Greening the supply chain has therefore become a requirement for many of today’s purchasers.

The good news is that paper is a key measurable element of any corporate environmental strategy and can be a quick-win in the pursuit of an ethical or ‘green’ purchasing policy.

Our Environmental Strategy

The Paper Company commenced development of its Environmental Management System in 2001 and was endorsed by certification to BS 8555:2003 by external auditors in August 2003.

Our Environmental Policy Statement was issued in December 2001 and was subsequently revised June 2004 and November 2006. The environment function was integrated within PaperCo to develop alongside the existing well-established Health & Safety function, with responsibility being taken on board by the Health & Safety Committee. Senior management provide support for all aspects of health, safety and the environment and are kept fully appraised of developments and progress at every stage.

Why have an Environment Strategy?

Ethical
As a commercial concern, we need to consider the impact we have on the environment and how we can manage our activities to minimise that impact. The implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) has enabled us to ascertain a base line from where to proceed, develop benchmarked systems and ensure continuous improvement as we work towards achieving environmental objectives & targets.

Commercial
In recognition of the increasing awareness of environmental issues, we aim to widen the scope of our EMS by seeking compliance to our systems from our paper suppliers. We have approached our suppliers and have assessed their environmental performance by way of a questionnaire. This has provided us with the confidence that our major paper suppliers are also conscious of the impact they may have on the environment and are taking measures to apply best practice to all areas of paper manufacture and supply.

Economic
Environmental savings make good business sense. While our primary objective is to reduce any negative impact we may have on the environment, it is possible to save money at the same time. The areas identified within PaperCo as having the greatest impact on the environment are: production of waste materials and diesel usage, particularly for commercial vehicles. By reducing the volume of waste we send to landfill through effective recycling schemes, we reduce our landfill charges and thereby help ensure a better environment for future generations.
