Laser pre-print paper properties

Where a good offset paper would have a Relative Humidity of 50% ±10%, laser pre-print papers have a Relative Humidity of 35% ±5%. This is to prevent the paper curling and buckling when it passes through the laser printer fuser unit. Too high a moisture content can also prevent toner fusing to the surface of the paper. Results from high speed laser printers are particularly affected by the Relative Humidity of the paper.

Laser Papers

If the paper is deemed to be laser compatible, it may be used with varying degrees of success in laser printers. Many paper manufacturers recommend such papers be tested before use, and will not guarantee the paper’s performance on laser printers. There is therefore, no recourse should any complaints arise.

Where a paper is guaranteed for laser printing, it has been specifically manufactured for litho pre-printing and subsequent laser printing. These papers are fully guaranteed for laser use, providing they are not rendered unstable by poor printing, unsuitable storage conditions or incorrect paper handling. It is advisable to check the type of laser guarantee, as some papers may only be guaranteed for low volume desktop laser printers, and not high speed high volume laser printers.

A number of papers available are guaranteed for laser and inkjet printing and others are described as suitable or compatible. Where the paper is guaranteed, the paper manufacturers usually produce their own Pre-Printing Guidelines, it is recommended, in these cases, that the manufacturer’s guidelines are observed to ensure optimum performance during subsequent laser or inkjet printing.

Whether the paper is guaranteed or described as suitable or compatible, it is recommended that pre-production trials and thorough testing are carried out to ensure compatibility with the end-use (laser or inkjet) printers, and that the paper conforms with the printer (laser or inkjet) manufacturer’s guidelines for grammage and use.
